Facebook Lists : Creating the List

Do you remember when you first set up your Facebook account?  I still remember, and how long ago was that?  I remember being so excited when I had 10 friends, then 25 friends, then 75, and whoa, stop the presses, 100!

Long ago I stopped trying to add to my numbers and, instead, tried to really pay attention to what the friends that I had, were doing.  I mean, isn’t that the point of Facebook, to interact with your friends?

I don’t mean manage their lives, I mean simply remembering that they have lives, remembering them, and looking like I care, in this status-overrun, game-filling, news feed!  It seems as if I need to have a calculating calendar go off in my head to think of them.  Either that or sit in front of Facebook 24/7 to see what everyone is doing at any given moment.  I’m so glad Facebook has the birthday feature so at least I have an opportunity to think of some people (hopefully).

Enter, the Facebook lists.  They come in very handy.  I personally use mine as a sort of calendar to make social calls on friends, but you can use them to filter friends from school, friends from work, friends from games, or the friends you want to hang out with on the weekend.  Whatever suits your fancy, create a list!

So, without further adieu, let’s start the listmaking.

Assuming you are logged in, let’s click on “Account” (upper right corner) and on the pull down, click on “Edit Friends.”

You will see an option, to the right, across from “Friends,” that says “Create A List.”  Click on that button.  When the pop-up window appears, choose a name for your list and type it in the box that says, “Enter the Name.”  Don’t worry if you are not sure what you want to call your list.  You can always change it in the future.

Now, you have the opportunity to click through your friends.  Each friend that you click on will be “selected” for your new list.  You will see the “Selected (0)” change with a real-time count of how many friends you have added to the list.  Again, you don’t have to spend a lot of time, worrying about whether someone should or shouldn’t be on the list, or whether you have included everyone or not.  You can always change the members of your list later.  Also, if you would like to just type in the name, you have that option in the upper right corner of this box.  That is very helpful if you want to start with a couple friends and add more, later.

When you are done collecting and choosing friends for this new list, click on “Create List” in the lower right corner of the box.

Congratulations!  You have created your first list!

Ok, come back for more Facebook articles and listmaking tips in this series, learning about filtering, efficient ways to use lists, getting all those friends on the list, and more.
